Amazon Customers Receiving Cash Windfalls due to Lawsuit

Amazon customers, check your email. You may have gotten a credit from the Apple e-book antitrust settlement.

The attorneys general of 33 jurisdictions, including Arizona, sued Apple, accusing it of fixing e-book prices with five U.S. publishers. In 2013, Apple was found in violation of antitrust laws, according to ebooklawsuits.com.

Now, Amazon customers who purchased e-books published by Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Holtzbrinck Publishers (Macmillan), Penguin Group (USA) or Simon & Schuster between April 1, 2010, and May 21, 2012, are receiving credits. Amazon was not sued in the case. It is disbursing money provided by Apple.


Amazon is emailing customers in June to say that the credit will be automatically applied to their Amazon accounts.

The credits can be used toward anything on amazon.com except subscriptions and gift cards. Credits are valid through June 24, 2017.

Credits may also be granted to people who purchased e-books through Apple, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Sony and Google.
